Estradiol is a steroid, an estrogen, and the primary female sex hormone. In women, it is essential for the development and maintenance of the breasts, uterus, and vagina throughout puberty, adulthood, and pregnancy. It also has important effects in many other tissues, notably bone, fat, skin, liver, and the brain. Estrogens also have important functions in men.

USES IN ME/CFS: Women with ME/CFS can experience perimenopausal, or even menopausal symptoms for years. In 1996 two gynecologists, John Studd and Nick Panay reported that 25% of their ME/CFS patients had normal FSH, but low levels of estrogen When treated (with estrogen) their fatigue decreased. Patients also reported an improvement in mood. From this, Studd and Panay concluded that there is a subset of ME/CFS patients who suffer from a state of chronically low estrogen.
