TREATMENT DATABASE
Claritin ((loratadine)) is a second-generation antihistamine useful in the treatment of seasonal allergy symptoms, such as runny nose, sneezing, itching, and watery eyes. Because it is very similar in structure to the tricyclic antidepressants, it may cause similar side effects (urinary retention, blurred vision, dry mouth, GI disturbances). In spite of being described as a “non-sedating” antihistamine, Claritin does produce drowsiness. Some patients have reported that they feel “zombie-like” after taking Claritin. Others report that Claritin has brought great relief from hay fever symptoms without adverse effects.
