Garlic (Allium sativum) has a long history as a medicinal plant. The earliest medicinal description of garlic dates from 3000 BC. It has been used to treat headache, insect bites, menstrual disorders, intestinal worms, tumors, and heart disease. Garlic is a powerful antibiotic and antiprotozoan agent. It kills intestinal parasites, destroys the bacterium that causes tuberculosis, and can be used against various fungi, including Candida albicans. Daily ingestion of as little as half a clove of garlic can lower cholesterol. Garlic also lowers blood pressure, which means it may have a negative effect on people with hypotension.

Some people with ME/CFS are sensitive to garlic in both its raw and cooked forms, particularly those with interstitial cystitis. Enteric, deodorized garlic pills can reduce intestinal upset. A commonly recommended brand of deodorized garlic in capsules, Kyolic, is widely available from health food stores.
