TREATMENT DATABASE
Lorazepam is a prescription drug used to manage anxiety. It is classed as a benzodiazepine. Benzodiazepines act on the central nervous system by enhancing the effects of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), a naturally occurring amino acid that works as a neurotransmitter in the brain. GABA is considered an inhibitory neurotransmitter because it blocks, or inhibits, certain brain signals and decreases activity in the central nervous system. Lorazepam is often prescribed for insomnia. Use with caution. Taking lorazepam for any period of time can lead to physical and psychological dependence.
