Aloe vera is a succulent plant originating in Africa. Because it exudes a mucousy substance when cut, it has a long history as a topical treatment for minor burns. More recently, aloe juice has been promoted as an immune enhancer and as a treatment for cancer.

Aloe vera has laxative properties. Patients prone to diarrhea should not take aloe vera internally.
