Flaxseed (linseed) is a good plant source of omega-3 fatty acids. It is also high in magnesium and zinc, two important factors in fatty acid metabolism, as well as B complex vitamins, protein, and potassium. Flaxseed oil is low in saturated fat and calories and contains no cholesterol. It has a delicious nutty flavor and can be added to salad dressings or sprinkled over vegetables.

Flaxseed is high in alpha-linoleic acid (ALA), which the body converts to eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), the two fatty acids found in fish oils. Some clinicians prefer flaxseed oil to fish oil because it is lower on the food chain and thus contains fewer fat-soluble contaminants.
